Marking Period 2 will coincide with Unit 2 of our curriculum, which is titled, “First Humans, Neolithic Revolution, and the Early River Valley Civilizations.” This unit looks at the first stages of human history and is roughly divided into three parts. The first part of this unit focuses on the hominids, and in particular, their culture and development. Next, our focus will turn to the Neolithic Revolution, which describes the transition from nomadic life to settled life. This development is also characterized by the change from hunting and gathering to farming, in terms of where humans got their food. Students will be tasked with explaining why the Neolithic Revolution is such a major turning point in human history. Lastly, the third part of this unit will focus on the early river-valley civilizations. In particular, we will focus on Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt, and students will compare culture and daily life in these two civilizations. Also, during this unit, students will learn how to read timelines and will work on their argument-based writing skills.
