The Second Marking Period is about to start!
Our next HMH Unit will be titled The Thrill of Horror. Our essential question will be "Why do we sometimes like to be frightened?
Our lessons will consist of reading and analyzing literary criticism, reading short stories and analyzing points of view. We will also look at the prefixes and suffixes of words to decode unfamiliar vocabulary. We will then look at the Latin roots of words to again, explore word meanings and decode unfamiliar vocabulary. The students will learn how to use a dictionary!
They will also learn how to write a scene from a short story and put on a performance of that scene. I am hoping this will have some of our introverts outside of their comfort zones, yet having a good time. We will read an excerpt of EPIC poetry and a graphic novel. Our end project will be to create a horror movie trailer- I really think the students will have fun with that! Their writing assignment will be to write a literary criticism and possibly a short story too!

Congratulations to ALL

As the school year draws to a close and our 8th graders prepare to take their next big step into high school, I want to take a moment to say thank you. Your support, encouragement, and partnership have played a vital role in your child's growth and success in English Language Arts this year.

It has been a joy to witness their progress as readers, writers, and thinkers. From powerful personal narratives to thoughtful discussions about literature, your students have shown resilience, creativity, and a growing command of language that will serve them well in the years ahead.

As they move forward, I encourage you to continue fostering a love of reading at home. Reading remains one of the most powerful tools for building empathy, expanding knowledge, and strengthening communication skills. Whether it’s through novels, articles, poetry, or audiobooks, helping your child stay engaged with reading will support their academic success and personal growth long after middle school.

Congratulations to our graduates—you should be very proud. I know they will go on to do great things, and I look forward to hearing about all their future achievements.

Wishing you and your family a restful, joyful summer and a bright start to high school!

With gratitude,

Ms Ferzola
